Mary Poppins, Life, and a Family Tradition

We have a family tradition. We go see a movie as a family on Christmas Day. This year, we decided on Mary Poppins Returns. I will admit to being a bit leery of it, billed as a sequel to the classic that I have come to enjoy.

I am a firm believer that things in our life are placed there intentionally. This is movie is one of those strategically placed items. It surpassed my expectations, even made me think a bit on some items that have been large in my life as of late.

You see, I spent the better part of 2018 not allowing myself the occasion to come to terms with the loss of two very important people to me (sorry to being the emotion down a bit). My Grandmother and my Mother both passed in 2018.

Both hit me hard, obviously. I think it was a subconscious decision to not allow myself the time to mourn and come to grips. Instead, I buried myself in any mental distraction I could find. I knew the holidays were going to be hard. I could feel it. I had piled more and more on top of the wound, that mourning that should have been taken care of. It was not going to be a pretty thing, and in early November, I knew things were not good.

You know, sometimes we get exactly what we need when we need it. Between this movie and a recent concert review, I really have done some soul searching. I am still not there. I don’t know as though I ever will be. I am searching for who I am and what I am supposed to be, but this movie helped out.

Sorry, Disney. I hope this is OK

A song really stood out to me in this movie. It’s linked here. It really helped me to hear these words. Even as my eyes slightly gloss over with tears as I write this piece, I feel a bit of comfort knowing that the words of this song could not be more true.

“After all, you can’t lose what you’ve never lost.” Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt)

Mary Poppins Returns

You know, this movie was a great story, and one that I think only a Disney that may bee trying to get back to the fun of the past could pull off. Man, if you don;t feel a full range of emotions, from where I started this piece to the fun and frivolity of “some stuff and nonsense could be fun,” according to Mary Poppins.

I really hope Disney continues with these kinds of movies. While it is a sequel it carries the torch of the original (to include a perfectly placed cameo by an original) and has the creativity to make the show magical for adults and kids alike.

Now, as for that concert, I don’t want to leave you hanging. I recently had the opportunity to review Lindsey Stirling at Shea’s. The show was good. I won’t rehash my review (you can read it here if you REALLY are curious). What stood out to me was the level of faith and how Stirling knew her dad who had passed was watching over her, helping her. She understood that element of not losing what was never lost. She has that level of faith to understand that. I can say that, one thing 2018 has done for me is give me the basis I need to grow my faith, to have that deeper understanding, but that’s an entirely new level…and I have rambled long enough for now.
